Can I just say this week has been crazy! My husband has been away for work for 2 weeks. Now I know that's nothing compared to those of you who have loved ones deployed, but this is the longest I've been away from my husband since we got married. Plus with 3 kids, it's been even harder! Anyway, the fact that I got anything done was nothing short of a miracle, on with the tutorial!
Have you ever come across a fabric that you just couldn't pass up even though you don’t have specific plans for it? Good, I’m not alone. I’ve had this fabric from Ikea for a couple years, since we lived in Utah actually. Well thank goodness for little girls because now I’ve found a use. (affiliate link - you can find it online HERE
)
The glider in her room used to look like this.
Totally nice, but the fabric had started to rip and there were a few stains.
Now, I’m no expert, but here is how I recovered the glider cushions with the cute fabric.
I laid out the fabric and placed the cushion on it and cut the fabric. I laid the fabric with the fold at the top of the cushion so there wouldn’t be a seam along the top.
Don’t forget your adorable sewing assistant. :)
Next turn the fabric inside out over the cushion.
Start pinning pretty snugly around the cushion, leaving the bottom open.
Then fold the cushion and remove it from the fabric. Sew along the line, removing the pins before you get to them.
Once sewing is done, turn fabric right side out and put it back over the cushion. Fold the fabric at the bottom in and pin together.
Then sew along the bottom of the cushion.
Repeat the same steps for the seat cushion.
For the gliding ottoman, turn over and remove the screws to separate the base from the padded part.
Lay the top out on the fabric.
With a staple gun, begin stapling one side, beginning in the middle, topping a couple inches from each corner. When one side is done do the side exactly opposite and pull snug before stapling .
For the corners, pull the fabric together and up,
fold down
and bring the excess together with the other fabric. Staple.
Turn the top over and reattach the screws to connect it to the bottom part and you’re DONE!
I’m playing around with the idea of painting the wood white, but all the other furniture in the room is this same blonde color.
What do you think? To paint or not to paint?
Great revamp!Good fabric choice ;)

ReplyDeleteThanks Julia, it really is a complete transformation. I just love walking in there and seeing the fabric, brightens my day. Thanks for coming by and commenting, hope you have a wonderful week!
DeleteI received my mother-in-law's glider when she passed. My husband just loves the chair but boy oh boy does it need to be recovered. Truthfully I have been afraid of even starting it. After your instructions I am no longer afraid and I will be starting this project very soon. Thank you for your clear instructions.
ReplyDeleteoh, I'm so glad I could help. I was hesitant at first too, then I just jumped in and it really went pretty quickly. Good luck!
DeleteI love this!! The fabric is so fun & poppy, I think white paint would make add to the cheeriness :) Michelle
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle, I think some white paint would look good too. Now to find the time to paint with all the littles running around. :)
DeletePining this for later :) You made it look very easy and doable! Our sliding/gliding/rocking/whatever chair needs a face lift :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenya for pinning! I'm glad you liked it. It really makes a huge difference and feels so much brighter in the space. Good luck with your redo!
DeleteLove it! That's a really awesome glider - and a very adorable sewing assistant you have too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Katy, she was very patient with me while I finished the project. So glad you liked the glider too. Thanks for coming by and commenting, hope you have a great week!
Deleteawesome tutorial and too cute assistant :)
ReplyDeleteThank you on both parts!
DeleteYour tutorial makes it look easy! I think I could do it :) Stopping by from Much Ado About Monday...have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou can do this! I was totally intimidated too, I'm a novice sewer so I was doubting my abilities. I just jumped in and it was fine. Thanks for coming by!
DeleteI have had a glider feeling neglected since my daughter became a toddler and didn't really need it in her room anymore. It's white and has pale green cushions...which looked cute in a nursery but doesn't really go in any other room. I priced new cushions and holy moly they cost more than the glider did. I thought about recovering it but it seemed pretty complicated. Your review seems pretty easy to me. My back cushion has all the lines on it, for looks mainly I supposed. Do you think it matters if I just forget they exist and cover right over it? Did you do anything special to attach it to the back? Mine has some velcro that doesn't really work anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think you can cover right over the lines. I did the first time. The stripes was the first time I covered it. The original was a purple velvety fabric with the lines through it. Covered right over it no problem. My glider has straps with snaps that attach the cushion to the frame. I haven't covered those yet because they didn't work great either so I was going to see how it did without anything attaching it. So far so good.
ReplyDeleteI am totally needing to do this! Now.. I just need to find some fabric.
ReplyDeleteI love your tutorial! It's much easier than others I've seen for this kind of project. How much fabric did you need to do this? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Wendy. It's not too hard at all. Just gotta go for it and you'll be fine. I used 2 yards for the two cushions and an additional almost half a yard for the footstool. Hope that helps, good luck!
DeleteThanks so much for linking up your awesome project to Take-A-_Look Tuesday - and look, I pinned and featured it today!

Deletethis turned out SOO great! Hi! Just stopping by to let you know you have been featured at Nap-Time Creations from the Create Link Inspire party. I've got some fabulous fabric themes features this week. So glad to have you part of the group. I've spread the word {and tagged you} around my social media. Would love if you could help to spread the word as well. Thanks and see you at the party next week! Emily
ReplyDeleteThank you Emily! I sure appreciate the social media love and shared it too! Have a great day!

ReplyDeleteThank you Amy, I sure appreciate you featuring this project. Have a great evening!
DeleteGreat job! I love the brightly colored fabric you used. I've been wanting to redo my glider, too, especially since I spilled Scentsy wax on the ottoman a couple weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteNavy Wifey Peters @ Submarine Sunday Link Party
awesome, let me know how yours turns out. This fabric really makes it pop. Thanks for coming by and have a great week!
DeleteHow cool! I have a glider I've been meaning to donate because the fabric is so ugly! Maybe I need to whip out the sewing machine I own but have NEVER used (my mom and grandma sewed me some curtains on it) and try to get creative. Saw you featured on another blog I read :)
ReplyDeleteLove the fabric and your reupholstery job. These gliders can look pretty old fashioned and blah, but, you've made it look snazzy! I'd like to suggest you paint the wood a dark blue to match tge blue in the fabric.
ReplyDeleteThat fabric is so happy and bright. I think painting the wood white would really pull it all together. Great update!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this tutorial. Yours came out so fabulous that I've decided to do one. How much fabric do I need to buy to do the project just like you did?
ReplyDeleteAwesome Valoris, I'd love to see how yours turns out! I used 2 yards for the glider cushions and a little than half a yard for the footstool. If your glider is the same size as mine, that shoud do you. Let me know how it turns out!
