Soapbox Saturday - Cancer Causing Chemicals in Everyday Products

This is totally out of character for me, but I read an article today that got my blood boiling!

Tide is agreeing to remove cancer causing chemicals from CERTAIN products....Excuse me, agreeing? (only after 80,000 people signed a petition it still took them a year to agree!)


Now, don't get me wrong, that's a great victory, but why in the world is it acceptable to put cancer causing chemicals in your product and sell that to the masses?!?! (plus they don't even put it on the label for consumers to know about, blech!)

I also read an article once that said scientists can tell what detergent you use from urine samples...yup, it seeps into your skin from your clothes and into your blood stream. From there these chemicals can wreak havoc on your body!! Asthma, skin irritation, eczema, rashes, headaches/migraines, etc etc.

This is yet another reason I switched to Shaklee 2 years ago. I have gotten to know the company and their standards are WAAAAY above this. They won't even make a product if the ingredients are tested to be tainted in anyway. They test everything and for that I am grateful. Sure it can be a pain when a product is temporarily unavailable, but I know they have my health and safety in mind.

It still baffles me how this kind of chemical laden product is everywhere, it's not just laundry detergent, it's your baby's shampoo, your window cleaner, your toilet cleaner, your air freshener, your deodorant (did you know almost all breast cancer biopsy have parabens in them - a common ingredient in almost all deodorants!!), your makeup. Almost everything now a days is laden with chemicals because it's cheaper to manufacture artificial ingredients than it is to source and derive natural -and safe- ingredients.

I won't be going back to store bought products anytime soon. I can't trust a company that thinks more of their bottom dollar than the health of their customers.

ok, I'll get down off my soapbox now. haha. All opinions are mine and only mine. I don't judge you the consumer, I just don't like companies that choose to do business in the way Tide and most others do. I just wish to educate people that if they choose, there are alternatives out there. Oh and Shaklee products work. End of story.

How to Clean Your Dryer Vent

 Hey all! I've missed you.

My parents came to town last week and we stayed busy with projects around the house and then we made a quick trip to the snow! :D

One project that I knew I needed to do was clean my dryer vent. My dryer has been really slow lately. It was taken more than an hour to dry our underwear/socks/etc. So I borrowed one of those dryer vent brushes to clean it out.

I found two screws on the inside of the lint guard and removed those to pop of the plastic guard. Once I did that it was really easy to scoop all the lint out.

Look at that pile of lint!! I've only had this dryer for a year and a half!

After I got all the big chunks out I used my vacuum to reach down and get all the little stuff and all the dust down there.

Seriously disgusting! And soooo unsafe! Dryers are one of the leading causes of house fires.

Plus if your dryer has to work harder to dry your clothes you may be looking at some costly heating element repairs. Don't chance it, go check your dryer NOW!

I am very confident that the dryer will be working at peak performance today when I do laundry!

Make Your Own Organic Baby Wash For Less Than $.01!!!

 Did you know that many commercially made baby washes contain cancer causes agents like formaldehyde?

Scary, right?!! 

I know you want the best for best for the babies and children in your life, so why not make an all natural, non-toxic, organic baby wash at home? And for less than $0.01, you can't beat that in the stores!

Here's how, it's soooo simple! 

First you'll need the most amazing multi-use cleaner I know, Basic H2 and a foaming soap dispenser. I found mine in the clearance section after Halloween for .25! I took the label off and emptied the other stuff out. 

Fill the foamer up, almost to the top. I probably could have put just a bit more in. Then measure 1/2 tsp of Basic H2. That's all you need because Basic H2 is super concentrated!

Swirl it around a bit to mix it in then give it a couple pumps and if it foams, you've got it.

Next test it on you're adorable subject....

Don't forget to have TONS of fun in the bath! :)

This baby wash is so mild on skin, I hardly have to use lotion on my boys! It is also a miracle worker on rashes! I'm going to be swapping this out for our body wash as well, no more cancer causing parabens for us either!
