Shaklee just stopped making their toothpaste product recently which has made a lot of us very sad and looking for a different option. I searched around and found a lot of homemade recipes but several almost made me gag, some suggested an improper use of essential oils, and some even used ‘natural’ but not safe ingredients!
This recipe looked like a winner from just reading it and I have to say I like it a lot, hopefully you will too!
Spirulina is the magic ingredient that gives this toothpaste the remineralizing property. It is high in calcium and phosporous which makes it great for strengthening your teeth. It is like algae so be prepared for the strong smell. Surprisingly enough though, you don’t end up tasting it!
DIY Natural Remineralizing Toothpaste (adapted from Growing Up Herbal)
-6 TBSP Bentonite Clay powder, can be found at an herbal stores or online.
-distilled water (about 4oz) (it’s very important that you used distilled to prevent any bacterial or mold growth!)
-2 tsp. organic, Non-GMO xylitol
-1/8 tsp Himalayan or Celtic sea salt
-1/4 tsp Spirulina powder
-Peppermint Essential Oil
Begin by grinding your salt into a fine powder. Either with a mortar and pestle or I find that an ice cream scoop in a small bowl works well too!
Next, combine salt with the clay, spirulina, and xylitol. Mix together (with a non-metal utensil) until well combined.
Add in your essential oils. The peppermint I used, was very strong so you only need about 5 drops. If you feel you need more you can add more later.
Finally, add the water BUT DON’T STIR, yet. Let the clay absorb the water for about 12-24 hours (it will be lumpy if you don’t let it sit).
Now you can put it into a squeezable travel tube available online, at the dollar store, or in the travel toiletry section in most stores. I had a napping baby and couldn’t get out of the house, so I just put it in a plastic ziploc bag and cut a tiny piece of the corner off.
